Smartwatch vs Smart Ring: What is the Future of Fitness and Activity Tracking

Smartwatch vs Smart Ring

There has been a significant increase in the popularity of fitness and activity trackers over the last few years. More and more people are becoming interested in keeping track of how their body moves, and thankfully wearable devices have caught up to the interest.

However, do you know what the difference between smartwatch and smart ring is? And which one should you choose? Keep reading to find out about the subtle differences.

Functionality

Smart rings and smartwatches are built differently, but they both use health vitals monitoring sensors. These sensors are responsible for collecting a user’s physical data while they're engaged in an activity such as walking or running. The information is then used to measure activity and track calories burned.

Smartwatches and smart rings are two different types of wearables. Normally, they're packed with features. For example, a GPS tracker would often be included on smartwatches. However, these two wearable types both come with an accompanying app where users can see detailed statistics and in some cases personal insights.

Accuracy

Accuracy is crucial. At Pi Ring research lab, we do everything possible to ensure that you get an accurate and high-quality product.

Smartwatches do not have the accuracy of smart rings simply because they are strapped to the wrist, which is much less sensitive. Our fingers contain many veins, capillaries, and arteries, so that smart rings can come up with a more accurate reading than a watch on the wrist. This best explains why doctors rely on fingers for blood pressure and pulse tests.

Plus, because smart rings are worn on the hand and not on your wrist, they do not have the same exposure to natural light as other trackers. This is why their accuracy is so important - only wrist-worn fitness trackers can be as accurate when worn tightly, but it's not comfortable for most people to do this.

Design

Smart rings are inherently lightweight, so there's not even a comparison with activity trackers. However, if you're looking for something to wear for longer periods, you should consider the design of the smart ring as there are choices that are significantly lighter but also inconveniently bulky. Meanwhile, if you want to wear a device to monitor your sleep, wrist-worn activity trackers can be restrictive - not the most comfortable option.

Build quality

When comparing smart rings and smartwatches, the build quality isn't too different from each other. The only major difference comes down to the specific quality of the watch or ring from the manufacturer. All things considered, though, the bands on smartwatches and smart bands may not last as long as their screens. Luckily, they are easily replaceable.

Security & Privacy

One of the differences between smart rings and smartwatches is privacy. With most rings, you don't need to worry about exposing personal information because they don't have a screen or loudspeaker. If a ring offers this functionality, it's much more important to look into how the maker handles your personal data. Texting on a watch isn't recommended because it doesn't offer protection against other people reading what you've written. Not to mention, if you smart ring is stolen, your personal data can't be compromised.

Battery

Smartwatches have a much shorter battery life than smart rings. The average smartwatch can only last a day on one charge, while most fitness and activity tracking smart rings will live for around 3 days. Apparently, the screen has a big impact on a smartwatch's battery life.

Pricing

Smartwatches are equipped with a slew of extra features that make them more expensive than smart rings. A decent smartwatch with fitness and activity tracking will cost you about $400, but can go as high as $700 depending on the brand. Meanwhile, smart rings in the same segment can range anywhere from $60 to $350.

These two wearables are designed for two entirely different generations. Smart rings are best suited for discreet and unobtrusive fitness tracking, while smartwatches and smart bands come with a display that constantly updates on your progress.

Wrap up

One thing makes smart rings more superior to smartwatches when it comes to fitness and activity tracking is accuracy. Besides battery life, another great factor is design. Smart rings are more comfortable and easier to wear as compared with a smartwatch.
